Mary, Did You Know?
It continues to amaze me how fast time goes by. It seems that I have turned around twice and now Christmas – and the end of another year – is upon us.
I love Christmas! Although in the past my Christmases have been, shall we say, less than happy, for the last several years I have tried to enjoy Christmas to its fullest potential. By this time every year, kids all over the world are begging to open at least one of their presents early, shoppers are rushing to get their last purchases made, and guys like me are waiting until 5:00pm on Christmas Eve to select the presents for their significant others.
Until I first heard Mark Lowry’s song, “Mary, did you know?” I never really thought about the impact that birth had on the entire world. Oh, I had considered the impact Jesus’ death had on the world, for without His blood there would be no salvation. I guess because the focus of messages and songs I had heard all my life focused on His death for salvation, I had never really considered the part His birth played in salvation.
The paradox of God manifested in the flesh of a newborn baby cannot be explained by our limited intellect. Just to think about what the child Mary had delivered meant… foretold by God to the serpent in the Garden of Eden to be the salvation of the world. Since hearing Lowry’s song, I’ve often wondered what not only Mark, but Joseph thought looking at the little bundle of joy in Mary’s arms. I’m sure they realized how special this child was, but how could they fully comprehend what lay in store for this young boy?
My favorite lyric from “Mary, Did You Know?” is, “When you kissed your little baby, you kissed the face of God.”
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas holiday, and that all of your wishes will come true.
What do you think? I'd like to know!
