What is the history of your ministry? Where did you begin? Why did you choose this path of ministry?
The Men of Music was born in November 1995 in Austin, Texas through the love of Southern Gospel Music and the love of God under the direction of then owner Cleon Yates. Yates brought in some of the greatest names in Southern Gospel to fill the positions such as Bobby Clark, Buddy Burton, Chris West and Jim Wesson.
In 1996, the group was nominated for Horizon Group of the Year in Singing News Fan Awards, in 1997 named as The Singing Ambassadors of the State of Texas, and in 1998 sang the National Anthem at a nationally televised San Antonio Spurs basketball game! Also, during this time Larry Gatlin wrote a special song "Eternity There" and appeared as a special guest on the recording.
In 2002, Yates made the decision to retire from the road. Then bass
vocalist Mike Bullock assumed the responsibilities of the group.
Continuing the rich heritage of the group, Mike continued to bring in talented people to fill positions as they became available. People such as Rick Solomon, Chris Smith, Ryan Jordan and Steve Warren to name a few.
In 2007 came the horrible news of Bullocks wife, Carolyn, being diagnosed with multiple myloma bone cancer. Shortly after this the group disbanded and stopped touring!
Then in August 2009 came the resurrection of the group with former baritone Greg Colburn, for lead Rodney Tyson and group new comer Tyler Hudson!
As for choosing this path of Ministry, well, it chose me!
Who are some of your major musical influences? Why do they affect you the way they do?
God gave me a desire to share the Gospel through song with the musical influences of people like Glen and George, Vestal, Michael English and Ivan Parker. Their musical talents and ability to communicate the Word of God through Music was such an inspiring thing for me! When Praying for direction in my life, I told God that I was available for whatever He wanted me to do! So, 30 + years later, here I am!
Who has been your biggest spiritual influence?
My maternal Grandmother, Mauvrine Cochran, who was a True Believer and Woman of God. I went to church with her and we attended every SG concert that we could which is where my love for this music began at a very early age!
How many dates to you do per year? What kind of venues do you sing at?
Currently we are on target to do 150+ dates this year, which isn't bad for a group who is now just a year out of the shoot! We sing in Churches, schools, civic centers, outdoor events. Basically, wherever Gods allows us to go!
Having said this, we have just signed with Evie Hawkins Agency in Nashville to handle some of the work load on the scheduling side of the Ministry. So with this now in place and with our recent alignment with MCM on the Marketing side we truly expect our tour schedule to take off quickly!
Are you involved in other areas of ministry besides music?
Music keeps us extremely busy but please know that we are EXTREMELY Ministry Minded!
Where do you see your ministry in the next 10 years?
If the Lord tarries that long, I see us working even harder than ever trying to get people to come to the realization that Christ gave His life that we could have Eternal life!
Talk a little bit about your current project and/or single.
We do currently have a project in the works. We are hoping to be in a
position to make announcements soon on the projected release date.
There have been some production delays but God is working all of that out! Just keep us in your Prayers as we try to get this to the public!
How can people reach you for a concert or ministry service?
People can reach our offices at 615-562-5394 or 601-573-4602. Email us at email@example.com, visit our website at www.themenofmusic.com.
Most importantly, PLEASE keep our Ministry in your Prayers as we seek Gods' direction in everything that we do!
